Sustainability through Collaboration

To empower the people of Nyakongo to realize their own vision of a sustainable society, WSCSD-Kenya in collaboration with other partners will undertake different development projects targeting ten (10) sectors highlighted below. Each project will be implemented in phases and will entail three elements of volunteerism: fundraising, research and actual  ‘doing’.

1. Water Supply and Sanitation

  • Construction and distribution of  low cost water filters
  • Rain water harvesting using earth dams, water pans and installation of water tanks in all households
  • Construction of VIP (eco-toilets)
  • Protection of existing water points e.g. dam, rivers
  • Borehole Drilling

2. Industry/Enterprises

  • Entrepreneurship training
  • Community Cyber Cafe
  • Rural Pottery:  introducing more terra-cotta articles, e.g. improved refrigerators, roofing tiles, flooring tiles, wall tiles, biogas burner
  • Food processing: natural food stuff (preservation, product diversification and value addition)
  • Cloth making – spinning, weaving, coloring, tailoring technology, equipment and facilities
  • Establishing a ‘village bank’ to mobilize community savings as investment capital for community enterprises.
  • Biotechnology

3. Food/Agriculture

  • Permaculture or agro-ecology
  • Agricultural Extension Services
  • Agroforestry (apiary systems, aquaculture, biomass transfer, boundary planting, fallows, fodder banks, orchards, hedgerow/alley cropping, home gardens, live fences, ornamental planting, sericulture, terrace stabilization, trees on cropland, woodlots)
  • Poultry farming
  • Fish farming in fish ponds
  • Horticulture (vegetable and fruit diversity and processing)
  • Bee keeping  and processing
  • Animal husbandry (meat and milk products diversity and processing)
  • Organic farming
  • Cereal/crop diversity and processing
  • Food storage techniques (dry, acid bath, sterilize)
  • Food cooking

4. Energy

Energy efficiency and self-sufficiency, ‘free’, clean and renewable energy

  • Reducing energy demand by 50%Achieving energy autonomy
  • Making agriculture key primary energy
  • Installation of Domestic Solar Energy Systems (Photovoltaics or Solar powered LED lights or solar lanterns)
  • Adoption of Energy Saving Cookstoves
  • Briquette Making
  • Communal Biogas production

 

5. Education

  • Supply of reading materials at schools
  • Setting up an evening reading camp
  • Establishing student mentorship program
  • Educational Sponsorship to orphans 
  • Mainstreaming Environmental Education
  • Rehabilitation of school facilities
  • School feeding programs
  • Establish Adult Learning Center

6. Environment

  • Solid Waste management – e.g. vermi-composting;
  • Forest resource management
  • Water resource management – water recycling, rain water harvesting and discharge
  • Establishing tree nurseries for production of seedlings and tree growing
  • Bamboo production
  • Agroforestry

7. Health

  • Awareness of  HIV/AIDS using community-generated documentaries
  •  Herbal medicine

8. Culture and Recreation

  • Establish a Talent Academy within the GREEN Center for nurturing talents in sports, music, art, cultural dances.
  • Establish Nyakongo league for both male and female teams
  • Organize an annual Nyakongo Cultural Festival

9. Transport

  • Distribution of bicycles to school-going children, health workers  
  • Road repair and construction using Do Nou Technology
  • Acquisition of Project Vehicle and motorbikes

10. Infrastructure

  • Construction of the Epicenter – Nyakongo Grassroots Research, Entrepreneurship and Empowerment Node (Nyakongo GREEN)
  • Improvement of School buildings using appropriate technologies
  • Ecological Housing – low carbon building technologies (use of Earthbags, bottle bricks, adobe, bamboo, straw bale for house construction)
  • Total sanitation – solutions for home sanitation, school sanitation, sewerage management, (from management of human waste, animal waste, agricultural solid waste as well as rainwater harvesting)
  • Solid Waste management – e.g. vermi-composting
  • Disaster responsive shelter
